Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive procedure, band-aid surgery, or keyhole surgery is a modern surgical technique. There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an exploratory laparotomy. These include reduced pain due to smaller incisions, reduced haemorrhaging, and shorter recovery time. The key element isthe use of a laparoscope, a long fibre optic cable system that allows viewing of the affected area from a more distant, but more easily accessible location.
